Kansas State University is seeking a Business Manager for the Biosecurity Research Institute, (BRI). The BRI is comprised of approximately 30 full-time faculty and staff and 5 student employees with an annual operating budget exceeding 4 million dollars. Incumbent collaborates with BRI Senior Administration to interpret policies for implementation of departmental business procedures and approving fiscal and human resource transactions. Incumbent interprets and administers federal, state, university, and department business policies, procedures and guidelines. The incumbent oversees administrative support staff and will be responsible for coordinating staff training on topics such as software, time and attendance, travel, and BRI accounting and inventory systems.
The incumbent will develop and administer, in accordance with federal, state, local agency and sponsored project guidelines, broad business policies, procedures and methods for managing financial, human resources, and sponsored research activities in collaboration with BRI Senior Administration. The incumbent is expected to monitor BRI income, expenditures, and solvency of accounts as well as analyze fiscal reports and confer with the BRI Senior Administration, and university regarding fiscal status. Additionally, the incumbent will create ad hoc reports for BRI Senior Administration on, accounts receivable, faculty salaries, faculty and staff performance appraisals, and departmental fiscal status. The accounts receivable and accounts payable functions for the BRI will also be supervised by the incumbent.
Supervision and evaluation of departmental business office classified personnel and coordination and direction of human resource transactions for the department will be handled by the incumbent. These include, but are not limited to: recruitment, appointments and position description updates. Further, the incumbent will advise and counsel department members on sensitive personnel and employment issues and facilitate employee/employer concerns along with documenting adverse personnel situations.
The incumbent is expected to actively participate in and contribute to BRI staff meetings and establish and maintain cooperative and supportive relationships with co-workers, students and clients. Other anticipated duties include but are not limited to coordinating required training in the areas of HR and fiscal management and serve on university, college and departmental committees and task forces as assigned along with attendance at professional development seminars/conferences for continued learning.
We are seeking applicants with a BS/BA in business administration, accounting, management or closely related field. Experience in these areas may be substituted for the required education. A minimum of three (3) years of administrative experience in management and accounting is required. Other required qualifications include, comprehensive expertise with spreadsheet and accounting software, verifiable knowledge of business management and accounting principles, proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple priorities simultaneously and demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preference will be given to those applicants with experience with University FIS and/or HRIS central systems, excellent organizational skills; proven ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships and dedication toward fostering diversity.
